Educational program regrouping the seven East Frisian Islands and the Lower Saxony Residential Secondary School in northern Germany implements Polycom RealPresence video solutions to facilitate the delivery of education and communications for the students, educators, and parents.
Germany, 20 February 2013— Polycom, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in open standards-based unified communications (UC), announces that NIGE, an educational program regrouping the seven East Frisian Islands and the Lower Saxony Residential Secondary School in northern Germany has implemented Polycom® RealPresence® video solutions, on each island and in a boarding school in Esens on main land to facilitate the delivery of education, and communications for the students, educators and parents.
“The family and the children living on the islands no longer feel isolated. With the Polycom classrooms, interaction and exchanges can take place easily” states Mrs Petra Plalenzatis headmaster and principal of the Esens boarding school. Using the Polycom video solutions, teachers no longer have to take the ferry from one island to the next, allowing them to make much better use of their time. High school students can now receive the full curriculum without having to go to boarding school on main land. Parents are able to meet regularly with the teachers and be involved in their children’s education.
The “New Virtual School” program came to life very quickly after the education Trade Fair didacta in February 2012 where Mrs Palenzatis, met Mr Krohn, N21, a private and government founded organisation specialised in the sponsorship of innovative high tech solutions in education. Mr Krohn ‘s team designed a solution resolving the challenges the national education had in delivering education to the Islanders. This project will be a showcase to be reproduced in other regions though out Germany. Local German Polycom Partner b24it was chosen to deploy the solutions.
NIGE uses Polycom RealPresence Room video solutions and Polycom RealPresence Mobile powered by the RealPresence Platform – the industry’s most comprehensive and interoperable software infrastructure – to securely video-enable classes, and facilitate the delivery of education to the remote islands, examples include:
- Teachers are able to deliver their classes to students located in several classrooms on Islands at one time
- High school students have the option of staying home to receive their education, using Polycom Mobility solutions on their personal computers and other mobile devices
- Provide access to a wider range of classes, such as foreign languages, biology, arts
- Parent/teacher meetings are held regularly
Jorg Gentz, director at B24IT, explains the choice of the Polycom RealPresence Platform “This is the start of a large project for the region; we needed a company that would be able to grow and expand with the project. Polycom has the best solutions on the market, and the widest range adapting to all needs. We are so confident in Polycom!” For Gentz ease of use and quality is mandatory for uptake. He goes on to say “Anyone’s skepticism about a video meeting or class fall as soon as the connection is made. The quality is great, and the children have the impression of being in the classroom with the teacher and the other children.”
