Oakland County, Michigan Wins 2007 Government Computer News Award Using Polycom Video Systems for Judicial Arraignment

OakVideo judicial arraignment system uses Polycom video conferencing solutions to improve court security and mitigate law enforcement costs

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Oct 24, 2007 : Polycom, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), the world’s leading provider of unified collaborative solutions, today announced that Oakland County was a recipient of the 2007 GCN Awards by Government Computer News for its innovative and secure Web–based video arraignment system using Polycom video solutions. The 2007 GCN Awards celebrate 25 years of empowering government through technology and proudly honor some of the most influential government agencies, companies, and technology luminaries.

“The GCN Awards are meant to recognize the government companies who are true visionaries in using technology to improve efficiencies and drive innovation in their organizations,” said Wyatt Kash, editor in chief, GCN. “Oakland County’s OakVideo judicial arraignment system is an excellent demonstration of how video conferencing technology can reduce processing time without compromising security for the growing number of court cases that the county is encountering.”

The OakVideo judicial arraignment system of Oakland County, Mich. enables the initiation of a video conference from any courtroom to any officer, prosecutor and holding cell in the county, facilitating the processing of inmates from arrest through arraignment with integrated document management and digital signatures. The courtroom sites use a rack-mounted Polycom video system connected to a server that records the audio and outputs from the conference for court records. Video and audio are also captured on digital video recorders and are automatically uploaded to case files. The courtroom’s desktop computers are equipped with digital signature pads and printer/scanner units allowing the judge to review case documents during the arraignment, sign documents in real time, and add additional documents to case files in written or digital format. At holding cells, Polycom Judicial VSX® wall units house set-top Polycom IP video conferencing solutions that have been designed for full remote control. The Polycom systems are responsible for an annual cost savings of $4.2 million for Oakland County, which also benefits from improved public safety.

“Oakland County is a great example of how court systems and state and local governments can use video to effectively collaborate; saving time and resources while improving public safety,” said Matt Jackson, government solutions manager, Polycom.

Oakland County will be recognized at the GCN Awards Gala on Oct. 24, 2007 at the Washington Hilton and Towers.  The event is attended annually by more than 1,000 senior government technology leaders and executives from government contractors nationwide.
